CLD MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the Center for Leadership Development to foster the advancement of minority youth in Central Indiana as future professional, business and community leaders by providing experiences that encourage personal development and educational attainment.

During the mid 1970's, Indianapolis community leaders identified several factors, which they believed prohibited or a least severely limited African American youth from achieving, or even aspiring to achieve academic, college and career success. The lack of exposure to the many career opportunities and options available to youth; the lack of awareness of the demands, expectations and preparation required to excel and take advantage of these great career opportunities; and the absence of a substantial number of African American professionals who could provide this guidance, mentoring, role modeling and simple encouragement all served to stifle the ambitions, hopes and aspirations of youth.

In response to the research and the needs it revealed, the Center for Leadership Development (CLD) was conceptualized in 1974 and established in 1977 with the mission of empowering African American youth so that they could first see the value and potential locked within them. CLD was charged with working with these high potential youth and challenging, training, teaching and inspiring them to pursue the highest levels of achievement in academics, college, career and life.

Since its inception in 1977, Mr. S. Henry Bundles, Jr., a distinguished and celebrated Indianapolis business and community leader, was CLD's founder and president until his retirement in 2000. CLD has produced 6,876 students that have completed its core program, the Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Project which boasts a 92% rate of retention (6,876 of 7,477). The purpose of the Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Project is for the young achiever to explore his or her total self through career exploration. The Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Project's 13-week curriculum provides 32.5 hours of intensive instruction and group dynamics designed to assist the participants in answering three critical youth development questions:

1. Who am I? 2. Where am I going? 3. How do I get there?

As a participant in the program, students are empowered to not only understand the importance of CLD's core principles of character development, educational excellence, leadership effectiveness, community service and career achievement, but are given the tools to incorporate them into their lives today, tomorrow and beyond!
