“CLD has meant a lot to me in my journey towards higher education because if it wasn’t
for CLD, I would not have had the funding to go to Purdue University. Obtaining a scholarship means that I am able to focus on my studies and not worry about whether or not I will be able to continue my goal to be an Electrical Engineer. I am truly thankful and grateful to CLD in providing me the opportunity to be able to receive it. Not only that, but with the SAT program, it helped me understand the test and prepare so that I was able to get the right score to be accepted into Purdue. Also the College Prep program taught me what I needed to do to choose the right college, the application process and how to apply for scholarships. I am the first person in my family to go to college and didn’t know anything about the process, so this helped me with the steps it took to get into college. But most of all, CLD has taught me what I need to know to be a successful human being, to have self respect and the importance of self worth, and how to develop my leadership abilities.

“CLD has provided me with a great foundation for life. Not only did CLD help to provide me with a scholarship, but the self-discovery program provided me with the skills and the insight to get involved at my high school, which allowed me to show off an impressive resume when apply for scholarships. Also the College Prep program taught me a number of things about college that I didn’t know and provided me with three amazing women to call and use as a resource whenever I get discouraged or stuck. I would like to encourage all of my fellow CLD scholars to be active in school and to strive for graduation. I implore them to remember the low statistics regarding African-Americans and minorities graduating, and for them to be determined to help raise the graduation rate in our community.”
“CLD has opened up opportunities for me that I could not have been blessed to have anywhere else. It has allowed for me to be in a remarkable position to better myself and the future ahead. CLD has enriched me with valuable information about the tools to being successful. Through CLD, I now know who I am, where I am going and how I am going to get there.””To my fellow CLD Scholars- I wish you all the very best as you embark on life’s endeavors. Never forget where you came from and the blessing that will help you achieve your dreams. Always be you and never steer off the path of happiness.”
“This whole CLD experience has taught me the value of all the things that colleges are looking for and that I didn’t know. It helps you think on how to solve problems, work well with others, and always be prepared for the unexpected. Which is why when I come back for CLD volunteer activities I want to tell other students about college and the commitment that comes with the opportunity. I want the chance to communicate to other CLD graduates that even after graduating from the programs you still represent the organization and this is a long term commitment to the Center of Leadership Development.”

“I have always had a goal of attending a college or university, but I didn’t quite understand or envision the process to get there. I am thankful to God and the Center for Leadership Development for making possible the opportunity to attend college. My journey to get to this place in my education was well worth it. Being involved in the Center for Leadership Development forced me to be more serious about studying and pursuing higher education. Because of this, I am grateful to be able to go to the university of my choice and pursue a career as a Physical Therapist. I would like to congratulate my fellow CLD scholars and encourage them to keep excelling in school, reach their full potential and never forget how they got to this point.”
“The biggest obstacle and cause of stress when going to college is the cost of attendance. Receiving one of the CLD scholarships would give me the opportunity to work to my full capacity and achieve success through my college experience.”
“Center for Leadership Development has set a vital foundation for me as a student to strive for excellence not only as a scholar but as a person as well. The 5 principles of CLD gives me the conscience decision to exercise the values of character development, educational excellence, leadership effectiveness, community service, and carter achievement. This isn’t just a pledge, its a lifestyle that has helped me through high school and will guide me through my college years and beyond. I definitely recommend to middle school and high school students to stay on track to higher education. I thank CLD and my parents for pushing me and helping me develop as a scholar.”

“CLD has helped me in a lot of ways while I was in high school. The program had me gather the materials that were needed in order to help my mind be prepared for my college life. To my fellow CLD scholars, the only words that I have for you are this: Don’t mess up the opportunity that was given to you!”
University of Indianapolis
“CLD has taught me the importance of making a good first impression. It’s imperative to stay on your game at all time because you never know who is watching you. The person watching you do well today could be someone that can give you a hand up in the future. When I think of CLD I think of all the early Saturday morning sessions that I dreaded going to at the time, but when I look back over last four year of high school in grateful that I went to those sessions. I leaned valuable lessons that I needed to know about high school such as making sure I got involved in school. To all of the future CLD scholars stay focused and finish out high school strong.”
“Receiving a CLD Scholarship will give me the opportunity to travel the world. Studying abroad to different countries will reveal many more ways that I will be able to use my trade than just in our country. It would provide a variety of opportunities that I can utilize to help these animals who are in need and support. Rather than doing minimal work just to get by and receive my license, it will allow me to get more hands on and expand on my possibilities of career choice upon graduation.”

“My fellow scholars; when school becomes to tough to handle just remind yourself that your future isn’t far away. Have fun while in college, its supposed to be the best times of our lives but remember that your schooling is important and comes before anything else. Life isn’t meant to be easy so just push through those hard times when you have a hard test coming up and a lot of stress on your shoulders. CLD has helped me with my communication skills which I lacked terribly and has helped me work better in group situations. CLD has also helped me with stress and dealing with it and taught me how to manage my time so I won’t have so much stuff weighing down on my shoulders”
“CLD has been very helpful in my college selection and college tuition, making it possible for me to attend Butler University for the next four years. The organization really does strive to give back to its community, and insuring that future generations will have many opportunities to succeed. The organization has inspired me to enter a career field where I can also give back, not only to my own community but to all who need help or inspiration for achieving their goals.”

“CLD has blessed me with many opportunities to grow into a mature young woman with qualities that will set me apart; these qualities such as communication and time management will place me in a high position to achieve my goals in college which will set me up for great success in my future career. I have learned from CLD how to present myself in a professional manner which will benefit me all through college and in the professional world. Being a CLD scholar makes me proud that my hard work in the classroom has been recognized and the CLD/Purdue financial assistance is allowing me to attend my dream college. Advice for the fellow CLD scholars, remember all of the CLD principles and apply them to your educational experience. No matter where you are in your professional lives, remember where you came from and the roles CLD played.”
“The Center for Leadership Development has really impacted me in a way I never thought it could. It has given me the courage to continue on my education in the face of doubt. I was taught me to be afraid of what I do not know. I am now more knowledgeable and ready to take on this next chapter of my life. I am truly happy to be a part of such a great program. I would tell any and everybody about this program and to take advantage of the opportunity. They help you know what to prepare for and instill the principles of success in you. Thanks to CLD I will go into college with confidence and motivation.”

“I am truly blessed and honored to be a Center for Leadership Development Scholar. Without God, my family, and CLD I would not be the same person I am today. Before I began my journey I believed that I lived in a world where no one promoted African-American success. Through CLD I saw that there are places that do encourage African-American success. CLD supplied me with the skills to succeed in life and school. They taught me to proud of where I come from and who I am. Through my experiences I believe that I am prepared and ready to be successful and prove it the world. I come from a small town, where African-Americans are not usually seen in a good light. To be surrounded by other African – American teens, like my fellow scholars, who wanted and deserved the same success as I wanted, encouraged me to work harder. They all inspired me to be that example in my home town. We live I a world where African-American success is not easy and I encourage all my fellow CLD scholars to continue living as inspirations to the world and other African-Americans. We are career achievement, we are leadership effectiveness, we are community service, we are leadership effectiveness, and we are educational excellence. The five principles for success are more than something we had to remember and recite. They are us. Congratulations CLD Scholars and thank you to everyone who contributed to my success at the Center for Leadership Development.”
“Receiving a CLD Scholarship will allow me to be an example to other high school students, who will soon be in my position, by showing them that hard work and perseverance can get them into college. Another benefit would be to allow me to become a prestigious individual in my community and in my field of work.”

“The greatest benefit of receiving a CLD Scholarship is having opportunity to obtain a Bachelors of Science in Biology at an affordable cost at a prestigious university. This scholarship will benefit me by saving time and money in order to achieve my long-term goal of becoming an optometrist.”
“CLD has empowered me to strive to become a pediatric nurse and has made me realize the importance of higher education. Without CLD, I would not be the leader I am today. I encourage others to take the initiative to work for their dreams and not wait on others to make them happen. If you truly want something, go after it, no matter what.”
“The Center for Leadership Development has made a great impact on my life. In my journey towards higher education CLD has been there every step of the way. I appreciate CLD because it has equipped me with the necessary tools to go to college and succeed in anything I put my mind to. Without CLD I would not be blessed with amazing opportunity to attend the college of my choice (Franklin College) on a full tuition scholarship. I know the Center for Leadership Development is the reason my excitement to attend college in the fall has exceeded my fears. To my fellow scholars… There is nothing that we can’t accomplish with a determined heart. Never give up!”
“Because of the skills CLD has taught me, I am more versatile, focused, and assertive towards my goals in life. I enjoyed meeting future leaders and great friends. This is a great program and to all youth involved, take full advantage of this opportunity and remember to give back.”
“The Center for Leadership Development further enlightened my potential and then challenged me to reach it. Through various classes over the years, I was encouraged to surpass mediocrity and expected to achieve my full potential. As a direct result of my time with CLD, I fully believe with the support of my mom and with CLD by my side, I will accomplish my personalized success aspirations. As Robert Frost stated in a very famous work, “The Road Not Taken”, I feel as though I also came to a point where, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-/ I took the one less traveled by, /And that has made all the difference”. CLD could be viewed as “the [road] less traveled by”. But many thanks to the visionary, Dr. Robert L. Bowen, look at us; resilient, fine, strong, Christian scholars! CLD has made all the difference, but then again… you already knew that. I love you, God bless.”

“I am thankful because CLD has not only prepared me for college but also for life. CLD has taught me so much about things I never thought I would need to know. Take what CLD has to offer to heart because they only want what’s best for you which is to be successful. ”
“CLD has helped me marked the path of my education and career goals for the next 20 years. I have gained confidence and courage to seek out the help of healthcare professionals and researchers. I will in attending Cornerstone University in the Fall of 2013 majoring in Humanities on a pre- medicine track with the hopes to attend Emory School of Medicine. As a message to my fellow scholars, our work has only begun, prepare your study schedule, prepare for your classes, exhaust your questions, and start something new on campus.”

“Center for Leadership Development has given me the opportunity network with community leaders. Center for Leadership Development provided me with critical information that helped me reach academic excellence. Center for Leadership Development not only brought me success in the classroom, but also in my community.”
“CLD has provided me with the opportunity to continue my education without the financial burden that typically comes along with it. Because of them, tuition is not something I must stress about. I am so grateful to Mr. Bland for leading this organization that has played a key role in my high school and future college career. From success prep student to CLD scholar, I have been blessed by this program. In success prep, I learned how to maneuver through high school. SAT prep showed me how to score high on that crucial exam. In self-discovery, I learned more about myself and my passion for teaching. Finally in college prep, I gathered tools that will help me successfully matriculate through college. I would recommend these programs to any high school student.
To all my fellow scholars- I have two pieces of advice for you. Follow God and follow your dreams. I know it sounds cliché, but if you follow God, everything will work out. Do not let anyone stop you from following your dreams. Even if people do not understand why you have chosen the path or profession you have, you have to know within yourself what will make you happy. So dream big, and dream on. Also scholars, we have been blessed with a rare opportunity. Most or all of our college tuition is paid for! Let us not take this for granted or let it become common. Let us try our best to take advantage of what we have been given. College will be hard but we have a once in a lifetime opportunity! For the sake of CLD, and for our own well-being, let us work hard and graduate successfully!
“CLD has connected me with successful business people and community leaders who look for ways to give back to the community. Individuals who are willing to share their time, resources, and knowledge in order for myself and other CLD students to be successful and out-going individuals of society. They encouraged me to keep the goals that I have for myself and to look for opportunities to grow and learn. However, the greatest lesson that I learned from these instructors was the importance of putting back into what was put in you. The value of volunteering your time and talents into your community to help the next generation grow and prosper.
CLD has also opened a path for me to be able to afford to attend the college of my choice. Before I learned about the Center for Leadership Development center, I was very unsure how I would be able to afford to go to school. I was afraid that the scholarships offered would not be enough to cover all the costs that would come with college. When I enrolled into the program, I not only met individuals of good character but I also found opportunities to help pay for my schooling. Because of the scholarship that I received, I am now able to attend the university if my choice. It has been a major blessing for both myself and my family.
Although meeting wonderful community leaders and receiving a scholarship for school are all great benefits for my college journey, they would be incomplete without this key lesson that I learned. The value of being a person of good morale. I learned that no amount of good fortune or accomplishments can ever substitute good character. CLD has motivated me to continue to strive to become someone of high character. To be someone that is trust-worthy and worth listening to, I learned, are important qualities to have in life. It is the key quality in individuals that help them differentiate themselves in schools, job sites, and in everyday life.”
