Dr. Shaila Stayhorn
Dr. Strayhorn is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to starting her postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Strayhorn received her PhD from the University of Memphis School of Public Health majoring in Social and Behavioral Science. She has also obtained a master’s in epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and bachelor’s in biology from Spelman College. Dr. Strayhorn’s research interest include assessing how factors of social support impact the quality of life among both cancer survivors and minority populations, who are at a high risk of cancer. Dr. Strayhorn is also a proud CLD alum (C’2006). She credits CLD for motivating her to stay disciplined and focused throughout her academic career. “Every session at CLD was facilitated by a successful community leader, who had a desire to see young minority students achieve academic success. Their words of encouragement still influence and push me to this day. I can only hope but to inspire other your minority students in the same way that my previous CLD facilitors inspired me”.
