CLD receives Champion for Character: After-School Program Award

Award recognizes trailblazers for character development in U.S. schools and communities

On September 13, 2022, Center for Leadership Development received the annual Character.org Champion for Character After-School Program Award for its programming and mission of cultivating Central Indiana Black and minority youth to become future professional, business and community leaders.

The award underscores the vital role of character formation and enrichment in CLD’s programming.

“We are honored to receive this Champion for Character Award from Character.org,” said Dennis Bland, president and alumnus of the Center for Leadership Development. “The recognition inspires and challenges us to continue striving to achieve preeminence in our efforts to nurture thousands of character-rich youth and families. We are so very grateful to Mr. Arthur Schwartz and the entire Character.org team for recognizing CLD with this Champion of Character Award.”

Character.org praised CLD for empowering Black and minority youth in Central Indiana to practice integrity, discipline and purpose. Founded in 1977, more than 20,000 students have participated in programs/services and character development experiences.

“The selection committee reviewed a large number of exceptionally strong nominations,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, president of Character.org, “but CLD’s five Principles for Success weave together an impressive tapestry of character-infused challenges, commitments and career opportunities that inspire and equip middle school and high school students to realize not just their career aspirations but also how to contribute and give back to their community.”

Founded in 1993, Character.org empowers people of all ages to practice and model the core values that shape our hearts, minds and choices. Character.org is a national advocate and leader for character development in schools and communities, working to inspire and recognize thousands of people in schools, organizations, workplaces, communities and families across the world who are “champions for character.”
